Old City Streetscape
Improvement Master Plan
The Old City District includes approximately 24 square blocks
whose streets, sidewalks, historic buildings, and spaces contribute
to the rich urban texture of Philadelphia. The existing infrastructure
in OCD is under tre- mendous pressure as office workers, theatergoers,
tourists, and residents move about on streets and sidewalks designed
and constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Master Plan illustrated how OCD could clarify and enhance
the pedestrian environ- ment, addressing the critical issues of
pedestrian safety and comfort, auxiliary and specialty lighting,
neighborhood image, and economic development. The Plan included
dynamic streetscape designs to complement the "hipstoric" built
environment and an economic plan describing future development
options.
