JFK Boulevard: A Gateway to Center City

JFK Boulevard, a broad, highly trafficked roadway linking Center City Philadelphia to University City with the monumental 30th Street Station at its western terminus, was lacking an appropriately designed streetscape. A civic-scaled unifying landscape was developed for the 2000 through 2300 blocks of the Boulevard.

The first phase of the project was the most challenging because its steep slopes were strewn with debris and it had never been a designed or maintained landscape. The slopes were reshaped into a series of terraces, and multi-layered plantings were installed selected for diversity and adaptability to harsh urban conditions.
