Jean C. Holler Contemplation Garden

The Wellness Community of Philadelphia, located in Fairmount Park, provides edu- cation and hope for people with cancer, and their caregivers, through support services, workshops, and social events. LRSLA's response to the challenge of siting a refuge for contemplation amid the Park's sur- rounding mature untouched landscape was to create a formal place for reflection and healing.

While siting a formal garden in an otherwise natural setting is not an obvious design choice, it is symbolic of a patient's need to assert control over their body after being diagnosed with cancer. The garden, com- posed of several landscape elements, is used as a place for meeting, relaxation, and med- itation as well as programmed events.
