The Pennsylvania State University
Chemistry Building Courtyard
The new Chemistry Building on Penn State's main campus was designed
in an L-shape to form a courtyard with two existing historic houses
and to ensure the preservation of a massive American elm. The protection
of this tree was of paramount importance to the University and
precluded construction in most of the courtyard.
LRSLA focused the courtyard design around the elm locating pedestrian
circulation and a garden terrace outside the tree's dripline. Stone
seat walls designed to mitigate the sloping topography are integral
to the building and terrace and create an amphi- theater for informal
classes, intimate conversation, or individual relaxation.
