Philadelphia Zoo Bird Lake
The Philadelphia Zoo was originally conceived as a Victorian pleasure
garden and has an impressive botanical collection to complement
its zoological collection. Bird Lake, the Zoo's central water feature,
is habitat to numerous waterfowl and many specimen plants grow
on its islands and shores.
The comprehensive landscape plan included opening up views by
selectively removing or limbing up shrubs and understory layers,
reforesting the site to ensure the continuous preservation of its
character as mature trees decline, and introducing herbaceous plants
to frame views and contribute seasonal interest. A new walkway
and paved seating area was constructed at the lake's edge to provide
access and points of observation.
